VH1 awards to celebrate music and fashion

by Lorraine Goods

As nearly all parents of teenagers know, music and fashion have an immense influence on each other. Now that historical link is being celebrated in the first annual VH1 Fashion & Music Awards, to be held December 3 in New York City. Among the nominees announced at a Wednesday press conference was Calvin Klein. The designer was nominated in the "Best Ad Campaign" category for his controversial print and television ads for Calvin Klein jeans, criticized by many as kiddie porn.

Performing at the live, televised event will be TLC, K.D. Lang, the Pretenders, and, to keep it hot, Tina Turner. Warming things up at the press conference were nominee announcers Jon Secada and supermodel Veronica Webb, who wore a tight-fitting white suit and slicked back her hair. When Secada greeted the model with a kiss on the cheek, she chortled, "Now that's what I like first thing in the morning!" She then added, "Monday's your night off, right?" In response, the embarrassed -- and obviously flattered -- "Grease" star could only mumble.

Other nominees included Kate Moss and Amber Valletta (Female Model of the Year), Madonna, Seal, Sting, Elton John and Annie Lennox (Most Fashionable Artist) and Tyson Beckford and Mike Campbell (Male Model of the Year).
